The School Teaching, Research and Service Awards are given annually to Science faculty members at all levels and teaching track faculty for their outstanding teaching and service contributions. Prof. Jiguang WANG and Prof. Tom CHEUNG from Division of Life Science were selected for this year’s School Research Award and School Service Award, respectively.
The School Research Award is presented to a faculty member at Associate/Assistant Professor level in appreciation of exceptional achievements in research.
Prof. Wang received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science in 2011. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Columbia University between 2011 and 2015. There, he developed a computational method—TEDG which reconstructs the evolution history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In 2015, he was named as an Irving Institute Precision Medicine Fellow and promoted to Associate Research Scientist in Columbia University. He has been focusing on the study of precision medicine of Glioblastoma under therapy. His current interests also include the research of machine learning and computational methods in biology and medicine.
The School Research Award is given to substantiation and teaching track faculty of any rank for his/her outstanding service contributions.
Prof. Tom Cheung received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2006. Before he joined the Division of Life Science at HKUST, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Thomas Rando laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine. Prof. Tom Cheung is currently a member of the Center for Stem Cell Research, the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience, the Center for Systems Biology and Human Health, and an affiliated member of the Division of Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering Graduate Program at HKUST. Prof. Cheung is a recipient of the Croucher Innovation Award in 2015 for the study of “Molecular regulation of stem cell ageing”.
This year, the School received a total of 10 nominations of outstanding faculty members with remarkable accomplishments and contributions. After a detailed review of the submitted dossiers and extensive discussions among members, the Committee has selected the awardees for this year.
Congratulation to the awardees for their impressive achievements and to all candidates for their dedication and remarkable performance in teaching, research and service. Special thanks also go to those faculty members who have actively participated in the nomination process; their support is a tremendous encouragement for our faculty members.
In appreciation of the excellent performance of these faculty, a cash award of HK$12,000 and an engraved plaque will be presented to the awardees at the School Board meeting on May 10, 2021. Please join us in congratulating this year’s awardees.
